How to find the SEO community mix that works for you

  1. Consider a mix of meetups in real life, a Slack or FB community (no more than two), following one or two experts you trust, and hitting up forums to check for industry chatter and questions when they come up.

  2. For every community that interests you, give it a good solid go and test the waters. Try to focus on one or two at a time so you aren’t overwhelmed with platforms and conversations.

  3. Ask questions, give back, and introduce yourself. Be kind, don’t spam, and abide by the guidelines.

  4. Check out their resources and quality of chat. Are folks kind, smart, engaging? Are discussions welcoming, honest, balanced? Are you meeting new people and learning new things?

  5. Enjoying yourself? Continue connecting with folks and see how natural collaborations pop up.

  6. Not feeling it? Consider sharing clear and respectful feedback as to why, in the appropriate place, and then leaving the group. It’s better to leave entirely, then to become perpetually inactive.

  7. Need to lurk for a little? It’s OK to go dark every once in a while, even for a few months. But if you don’t like it, don’t check it, and don’t intend to, the host would rather that you give up that space for someone who wants it. Simply let your renewal lapse.
